What is an Electronic Travel Authorization?

An Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) is a mandatory entry requirement for foreign nationals who do not require a visa to enter Canada by air. This authorization is electronically linked to the traveler's passport and remains valid for up to five years or until the passport's expiration date, whichever occurs first. In the event of obtaining a new passport, a new eTA is necessary.

Possessing a valid eTA allows you to make multiple trips to Canada for brief stays, typically up to six months at a time. An eTA is not required for domestic travel within Canada.

It's important to note that having an eTA does not guarantee entry into Canada. Upon arrival, a border services officer will request to see your passport and other required documents.

Who is required to obtain an eTA for traveling to Canada?

1.Foreign nationals exempt from visas must obtain an eTA to travel by air or transit through a Canadian airport. However, this requirement does not apply if they are arriving by car, bus, train, or boat (including cruise ships).

2.Travelers who could potentially apply for an eTA:

Citizens from specific visa-required countries might qualify for an eTA instead of a visa for air travel to Canada. However, if these travelers are arriving by car, bus, train, or boat, including cruise ships, they still require a visitor visa.

3.Travelers who are ineligible for eTA and must carry alternative identification:

Canadian citizens, including dual citizens, must possess a valid Canadian passport. American-Canadians have the option to travel with either a valid Canadian or U.S. passport.

Canadian permanent residents must hold a valid permanent resident card or permanent resident travel document.

4.Travelers exempt from the eTA requirement include:

U.S. citizens, who are exempt but need valid identification like a U.S. passport.

Lawful permanent residents of the United States with valid status, who must carry official proof of their status (or an equivalent document) along with a valid passport from their country of nationality (or an equivalent travel document).

Refer to the comprehensive list of documents for lawful permanent residents of the U.S. for further details.
